Ms Motivator!

interview with...
from February 2008

Complete with post-Christmas extra pounds, Paul Hunt caught up with lesbian personal trainer Roxy to find out what motivates the motivator

Hi Rox, welcome to Shout! How did you get involved in fitness?

I’ve been interested in fitness since my school days. I was your typical tomboy taking part in athletics, weight training and team sports.

When did you decide that fitness was the career path for you?

It’s always been a dream of mine, but it wasn’t until I started working at a gym that I was given the opportunity to study with NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) for my advanced Level 3 Certificate that I decided to follow my dream.

What makes you and your training style unique and effective?

I’m highly motivated and an excellent role model. I practise what I teach. As a lesbian personal trainer I can give my undivided attention to my clients in an environment they feel safe and secure. This enables me to help you reach your full potential.

If you could give one piece of advice to those wanting to shed the post-Christmas pounds, what would it be?

Set yourself achievable goals. You are more likely to succeed by taking small steps rather than trying to make a giant leap!

How has being a woman influenced the role you have played in fitness?

I feel I’ve had to work harder in my own fitness as it’s very male dominated. I can appreciate why women might feel intimidated or do not wish to train in a gym. At the same time, it makes me more determined to succeed.

What is the most important thing you have learnt from your clients?

People are different and each of us has our own needs. But whilst we are all different, we all need to feel good about ourselves. Our physical wellbeing enhances our mental wellbeing.

Tell me a little bit more about your training techniques - what would a typical workout consist of if someone were to come and workout with you?

There is no ‘typical’ workout. Everyone has different abilities, desires and goals. All my clients are assessed, then I can devise an individual programme tailored for them: whether for weight loss, body building etc. Or for your specific sport.

What are you most proud of in your life?

I feel I’ve made something of myself and I learnt not to settle for second best. And I’m still achieving!!

What changes would you like to see in the equipment found most conventional gyms

There’s nothing wrong with the equipment. Sometimes there isn’t the staff available to give that time and instruction required for equipment to be used effectively. Conventional gyms can’t always provide that personal touch.

What’s your own training schedule like?

I train five times a week. I enjoy running, swimming, weight training and circuit training.

What types of training have you found to be most effective?

All types are effective…Ones that you enjoy are even better!!

What is your current diet like? Do you take any supplements?

I don’t need supplements as I have a good balanced diet with lots of fresh foods. So at weekends I can afford to eat what I want… one (or two... or three!) bars of chocolate!

Any last thoughts for our readers?

You mean you haven’t heard enough?! OK, just the one thing, There’s no such word as ‘can’t’!!
