in the news from June 2009
June 4th is the date for the Euro Elections, and if you’re registered to vote, then here’s why you should, even if you normally couldn’t give a stuff about politics: unlike UK elections, the Euro Elections operate on proportional representation, meaning that each party gets candidates according to the proportion of the votes they get. There are no clear-cut winners and losers as there are in UK elections: by not voting, you’re potentially allowing the BNP to gain a greater share of the vote - which, with their homophobic attitudes and policies, could mean trouble for lgbt people across Europe. It takes ten minutes to vote - but the consequences of not voting could last for years. And if you want to express your disapproval of ‘mainstream’ parties, there are others - such as The Green Party - who are decidedly pro-gay.
