Whilst the International Day against Homophobia (IDAHO) is the17th May each year, Bradford Council and The city’s Equity Parnership marked the event the following day, Monday 18th, with a Civic Reception by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councellor Howard Middleton in the historic Little Germany district of the city. Hosted by Shout!’s Chief Feature Writer Paul Hunt, several speakers including Mr Gay International 2009 PC Mark Carter, Aldene Woodward from the West Yorkshire Fire Service, and Shout!’s favourite author Narvel Annable provided an insight into the lives of the lgbt community. IDAHO is the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia. It was founded by Louis Georges Tin in 2005. Campaigns and initiatives take place on or around May 17th every year to combat prejudice against lgbt people. May 17th is chosen because it marks the anniversary of the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental diseases. IDAHO is needed because 86 member states of the United Nations still criminalise consensual same sex among adults. Among these, seven have legal provisions with the death penalty as punishment. In addition, there are six provinces or territorial units which also punish homosexuality with imprisonment. The rainbow flag flew over City Hall the previous weekend to mark the event, and the evening was rounded off with an excelelnt rendition of ‘I Am What I Am’ by Andrew Steele from BLAGY - Bradford Lesbian and Gay Youth.Speaking exclusively to Shout! PC Carter said: ‘The day is important to our community and we must not forget those in other countries who still face imprisonment and even death due to their sexual orientation.’
Paul Hunt
