When David Markham-Dorney set up Social Recruitment an employment agency providing recruitment and training services for the public and community sectors, he didn’t imagine that he would have such a diverse range of people apply for work. Markham-Dorney says that even though his agency has only been open for three week, he has had interest from over 50 people looking for jobs. Of these people, eight were gay, 18 black or Asian and six were disabled. The website does contain images of all these groups of people - is that the reason for the over representation or is there another factor: do minorities find it more difficult to find work, even though legislation is supposed to prevent that?
‘I am pleased about the response,’ says Markham-Dorney, ‘but it does worry me that it appears that minority groups are still being discriminated against. The organisations I am placing people with are all equal opportunity employers and I hope that many of the candidates on my books will find work.’
