Plans for Leeds Pride 08 are moving faster than a speeding bullet. The organisers have adopted ‘heroes and heroines’ as the theme for the day which will take place August 3rd.
David Dabell from the organising committee explained: ‘We all have, and we all are, heroes and heroines. By heroes and heroines we mean anybody who has touched you in a good way, anyone you have looked up to, anyone you wanted to be, and anyone who has inspired you. So it could be yourself, a superhero, your mum or dad or someone from our history like Vita Sackville-West, Quentin Crisp, Divine or Hong-Kong Fooey.’
Millennium Square will this year play host to the pre-parade main stage from 1pm featuring a galaxy of local and national talent - and when they say talent they mean talent. Bands, DJ performers and singers as well as a whole bevy of Mr Gay UK finalists who will be expertly handled by Galaxy FM’s very own Northern star Jo-Jo.
‘We have decided that this year we will have a longer time in Millennium Square,’ says Dabell. ‘It’s a great venue for the main stage and it means that the crowds will be really pumped up for the city centre parade that starts at 3pm and the huge scene party that follows.’ Dabell continued: ‘The scene party is going to be massive this year with Lower Briggate being closed off to traffic and the venues pulling out all the stops to deliver the most memorable and mega day for our people.’
As well as the fantastic parade and scene party there will be a market and community arena, a quiet chill out space, a youth focus area, a fun fair, food and drink concessions and much more.
‘For those of you who want to spend more time in Yorkshire’s capital, our friends in the hotel trade are offering special rates for the Leeds Pride weekend. So far Bewleys Hotel (£59 per room per night), Queens and Radissons from £69 pppn. The Golden Lion Hotel will give special rates on application.
